A Lead Free Future: Research and Recommendations for Protecting Children from Lead in Water

A multi-ethnic group of daycare children sit close together on the floor, with their legs crossed and their arms around one another, as they pose for a portrait. They are smiling and enjoying their time together.

In 2018, Elevate and Illinois Action for Children (IAFC) began working with child care providers across Illinois to address a common source of lead in our environment: drinking water. In the process of working with child care providers, we learned about the challenges they face when trying to test and mitigate sources of lead in water.

“A Lead Free Future” was developed by Elevate and Illinois Action for Children to share the experiences of child care providers in fulfilling state lead in water testing and mitigation requirements and guide future policies and programs addressing lead. It is critical that states, communities, and leaders working in the child care and water safety spaces share lessons learned and ideas on how to improve access to lead prevention, testing, and mitigation so that all children have access to a safe and healthy learning environment.
